Confluence

This painting has a historical perspective to it. It was made to portray the relationship between Nigeria’s colonial masters and the 2 main rivers which pass through Nigeria: River Niger and River Benue. The Niger river is brownish in colour while the Benue river is a lot clearer and blue. They come from different ends of the country and meet at the confluence point in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The Confluence as seen from the top of mount patti is a very beautiful and captivating sight. Mount patti (I truly do not know if it’s really meant to be called that but nevertheless that’s what it’s called) is a major tourist destination and is 2500 feet above sea level. Lord Luggard’s first house in Nigeria is located on mount patti.

Contemporary art: Confluence by artist Nkolika Anyabolu (MD)

I did this painting in preparation for my solo exhibition which I used to portray the beauty of the ancient city of Lokoja. The size is 28" x 55" (71.2 x 140cm). I went up to the mount and took some beautiful shots of the confluence and simply took in the beauty of the view.

The painting portrays Lord Luggard sitting on the confluence point with the map of Kogi State beside him. The painting was bought by the Governor of Kogi State and is currently hanging in the conference center of the Kogi State government house.
